Wear rain pants instead of snow pants for winter recess duty. Rain pants cut the wind better.
Kids tend to like to run between swings, climb on top of monkey bars, and run up slides backwards. Know your school policy or acceptable use for the playground. It is best to remain consistent across the staff so the kids know the same rules apply. This can be especially true when winter comes and kids like to throw snow, another thing they like to do. Be proactive, find out before you have recess duty.
When inclement weather causes recess to be indoors, be prepared. Establish behavior expectations in advance and explain what activities students may choose. You may choose to have some activities that designated as indoor recess activities only. If you have a very active class, prepare some fun worksheets and assign to half the class for one recess and the other half of the class for a second recess.

Shoot a basket, catch & throw a football, jump a rope, etc. with your students. It takes 30 seconds, but it can go a long way in building relationships with your students. Sometimes they want you to continue playing with them. Use your judgement to determine if you can be involved with the activity and monitor students under your supervision on the playground. When on recess duty, go to the middle of the playground, don’t stand 50 feet from the door. Walk slowly and turn so you can monitor the entire playground. Identify the potential problem areas and keep closer to these areas.
